My microphone isn't working. What can I do?

Most of the time the browser is blocking the microphone or another app is using it. Here's how to check, step by step.

Updated

Try these in order. Most microphone problems are fixed by the first two.

  1. Check the permission. If you see Your microphone is off for Verbalta, the browser is blocking it. Follow the steps on screen, or see I said no to the microphone. How do I turn it back on?
  2. Close other apps that use the microphone, like a video call, a voice recorder or another browser tab, then try again.
  3. Tap, speak, tap. Tap the microphone once to start, speak, and tap again to send. Very short taps are ignored on purpose, so speak for at least a second.
  4. Check the timer. While recording, a timer shows next to the microphone. If it doesn't move, reload the page.
  5. Check your headphones. If you use wireless headphones, make sure they're connected, or disconnect them and use the phone's microphone.
  6. Use a supported browser. On iPhone or iPad, use Safari or Verbalta from your home screen. On Android, use Chrome. On a computer, use Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox. Links opened inside other apps (like social media apps) may not allow recording: open the link in your browser instead.
  7. Restart. Close Verbalta completely and open it again. If that doesn't help, restart your phone or computer.

The microphone button is grayed out

The microphone waits while your coach is listening and replying. If it stays gray, your browser may not support recording. Update it, or try one of the browsers above.

Your coach can't hear you clearly

If your coach says a recording came through unclear, move somewhere quieter, hold the phone closer, and speak at a normal volume. Then send it again.
